Irving Shipbuilding Commits $2 million in Funding for Research in Canada’s North

   HALIFAX, June 9, 2016   – Irving Shipbuilding Inc. announced today a new funding commitment of $2 million in partnership with the Nunavut Arctic College for an applied research project with a northern focus.

“Irving Shipbuilding is pleased to support this call for research proposals for the Nunavut Research Institute,” said Kevin McCoy, Irving Shipbuilding President. “Projects like these help to ensure Canada has a developed and vibrant marine research industry, particularly in the Arctic.”

The $2 million commitment is being made pursuant to Irving Shipbuilding’s Value Proposition obligation under Canada’s National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS). Irving Shipbuilding is committed to spending 0.5% of contract revenues with the aim of creating a sustainable marine industry across Canada, amounting to approximately $12 million over the duration of the Arctic Offshore Patrol vessel contract.

“This initiative, made possible by Irving Shipbuilding and NSS, will develop Arctic community capacity to engage in research,” said Joe Kunuk, president of Nunavut Arctic College. “We look forward to supporting innovative proposals designed to develop and enhance marine safety.”
